RUDY BURCKHARDT

B. 1914 Basel, Switzerland, D. 1999 Searsmont, ME

Rudy Burckhardt was a remarkable man - his films, photographs, and paintings, his warmth and personal grace, his sense of humor - are greatly cherished. It was my privilege to know him during the last two years of his life while working on a lithograph for the Fine Arts Work Center in Provinvcetown, MA. His ability as a draftsman, a bringer of life to the subject was unsurpassed.

“While proofing the plates he had drawn in the woods near his house in Maine, he shared stories of New York life in the 30s and 40s, and told jokes, all while bringing his unique sense of concentration to the workshop.”
