Mary Heilmann
B. 1940, SAN FRANCISCO CA
In Mary Heilmann’s brilliantly colored print, the artist uses her signature grid of twelve squares set against a white-toned background. The squares of color were built up with washes to achieve a translucent quality. In between the squares, a slightly pink white was printed over a very transparent green to achieve a balance of weight and to form the hard edges of the squares.
With the generous support of the Florsheim Foundation, The New Provincetown Print Project (see PCN May-June 1996) has been able to continue its publication of new editions. As part of the project , the artist traveled in March to The Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown to visit with the ten visual arts fellows. The Work Center provides residencies for ten visual and ten writing fellows for seven months each year.
